Estimating
Our construction estimating service is used by contractors, developers and private organisations across the industry for both traditional and design and build projects. This is an efficient and reliable service which offers contractors the flexibility to accept tender enquiries in the knowledge that they will receive the correct level of attention from experienced estimators.
We apply best practice to calculate the keenest estimated cost. We identify areas of risk and seek to exclude or limit risk resulting in a more competitive estimate. We apply procedures to promote keener and timelier sub-contract quotations. We encourage supply chain management, repeat use of core sub-contractors and a collaborative approach to tendering with suppliers and sub-contractors. We believe that reciprocal arrangements requiring keener sub-contract prices in return for continual work orders benefits both main contractor and sub-contractor over time.
The competitive edge:
The cost of tendering rises in proportion to the requirements of tender submissions and it becomes more important for a contractor to maintain an acceptable success rate when tendering. In seeking to calculate the lowest estimated cost, effective procurement of the sub-contract works is vital as this will often make up the majority of the total cost.
When preparing an estimate we will look to gain the competitive advantage. This may be through alternative or more economical suppliers, manufacturers or materials, design simplifications, or more cost effective construction methods. Through careful interpretation of the client’s requirements, as stated in the tender documents, we can submit a very competitive tender with alternatives for the client’s consideration.
Qualifications or tender notes may be used to set aside items which add risk to the tender. We may offer provisional sums for unclear items rather than adding a risk allowance to the tender. This commercial approach, if clearly explained, is legitimate and, indeed often necessary in competitive tendering. The lower cost option will be welcomed by the client and provides a competitive edge for the contractor.
